What forms of payment does Peak Health Nutrition LLC take?

Nutrition counseling services at Peak Health Nutrition LLC may be a covered service. Insurance plans can differ, so you will want to verify your benefits prior to your first appointment. In order to bill your insurance for your appointment fee, we will need to confirm the details of your insurance benefits and have you request any necessary referrals from your primary care physician prior to your first appointment.

Plans accepted:

Aetna

Cigna

Community Health Options

Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare

Verifying Health Insurance Benefits: To verify your benefits call the number on the back of your insurance to verify if you have insurance benefits for nutrition counseling.  You will want to ask if you have benefits for procedure codes 97802 & 97803. You will also want to find out if ICD10 code Z71.3 (dietary counseling) is covered or if a medical diagnosis is required. If a medical diagnosis is required, you will want to ask your doctor to fax a referral with a medical diagnosis list.

You will also want to find out if a doctor’s referral is required and if so have your doctor fax a referral to us at: 207-544-5185

Other good things to find out:

·       Is there a limit on the number of visits allowed?

·       Do I have a co-pay or co-insurance?

·       Do I have a deductible to meet before insurance pays?

·       Do I have coverage for telehealth nutritional services?

For clients with insurance coverage through a company Peak Health Nutrition LLC is not contracted with, we are happy to provide you a copy of a superbill that you can submit to your insurance company to request reimbursement. You will want to find out if you have Out-Of-Network Benefits. Some plans are great at reimbursing, while others may not reimburse at all.

Amanda Leach, RDN, FMNS, CLT is licensed in the states of Maine and New Hampshire. We will provide a Superbill upon request, with procedure code and diagnosis code for you to submit to your insurance company.

Discounts and Paying Out Of Pocket: If your insurance plan does not provide benefits for nutrition counseling or you do not have insurance, you may qualify for a prompt pay discount.  A Good Faith Estimate is available upon request.

Payment is due at the time of service.  We accept all major credit cards (American Express, Discover, Visa, Mastercard, and others) along with debit, and HSA/FSA cards.

What is the difference between a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, a Nutritionist, and a Health Coach?

A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) has to become certified through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to be able to practice. To earn this certification, they need to:

  • complete a bachelor’s or higher degree at a regionally accredited university or college in the U.S.

  • complete 1,200 hours of supervised practice through an accredited dietetic practice program

  • pass a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration

  • and complete continuing professional educational requirements of at least 75 continuing education credits every 5 years to maintain registration

This allows them to be able to treat specific health conditions such as Diabetes, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Celiac Disease, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Gout, and many others. It also allows them to understand how dietary changes may impact these conditions positively or negatively and make best practice recommendations.

There are no regulations, licensing, or certification requirements to be able to call oneself a Nutritionist or Health Coach. Some organizations do exist that certify Nutritionists, however, it is not mandatory for someone to complete this certification to be able to call themselves a Nutritionist. So someone may just take a single course or weekend class and then call themselves a Nutritionist. Also, some states require no certification, so in those states, anyone can call themselves a Nutritionist or Health Coach. They may have very little to no formal training in nutrition, or on health conditions, and still be able to offer and market nutritional advice for payment.

Do I need a referral?

At Peak Health Nutrition LLC, we see patients who are self-referred or referred by their physician. Some insurance companies require a physician referral to use the nutrition coverage on your plan. So if you plan to try to submit a superbill to your insurance for reimbursement you may want to see if your primary care doctor will give you a referral. The best way to find out if your insurance will reimburse for nutrition counseling is to call your insurance provider using the number on the back of your insurance card. If you will be doing a telehealth visit be sure to tell them that as well.
